Spiros In Court Today

So for all you OLY fans, the story that Spiros denied and then admitted is getting interesting. He appeared in court in Montego Bay today to face charges of unlawful bookmaking. Spiros has all along claimed that he was licenced, but he is not and that is the basis of the charges. Spiros tried to argue that his Montego Bay Free Trade Zone licence allowed him to operate a "Call centre" he is only now realising that this still does not get him around the gambling laws.

His second line of defence is that he has a letter from a Minister allowing him to operate a bookmaking operation. I have not seen the letter, but I am told that it was signed in the mid 90's by none other than now disgraced minister Errol Ennis who was forced to resign when he was found to have used constituency funds to settle gambling debts. Once again the letter will do more harm than good, and does not get around the gambling legislation.

Spiros did apply for a licence when he realised that all of this was going to blow up, but he was turned down, and the charges he currently faces stem from that investigation.

I know he has many supporters out there who want to dismiss this as an attempt to get bribes by a corrupt government but that is dead wrong. Spiros is a gambler and he has been bluffing for a long time. Now his bluff has been called.

The original story on the Minister from the Gleaner is below

Ennis resigns
Wednesday | May 30, 2001

Errol Ennis

MINISTER OF State in the Ministry of Finance Errol Ennis resigned yesterday following revelations that at least seven cheques he had tendered to settle gambling debts had bounced.

A statement from the Office of the Prime Minister yesterday afternoon said Mr. Ennis had resigned his ministerial post with immediate effect.

"Mr. Ennis's letter of resignation will be submitted to the Acting Prime Minister, Seymour Mullings, tomorrow May, 30th, 2001," the OPM statement said.

Prime Minister P.J. Patterson, is in Malaysia.

According to the OPM statement, Mr. Ennis indicated his resignation was intended "to admit error of judgement and to relieve the party of the embarrassment of his action".

The State Minister had been under pressure to resign following his admission, which was reported in The Sunday Gleaner, that he had tendered two cheques totalling $23,000 which were returned.

When Mr. Ennis spoke with The Sunday Gleaner last week he said, "Yes, it was a private matter involving two cheques totalling $23,000 which was made out to a company under the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission."

However, it emerged yesterday that at least seven cheques were involved totalling more than $80,000.

Copies of the cheques obtained by The Gleaner indicated cheques were drawn on accounts at Union Bank, National Commercial Bank and Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC). The largest sum was $17,730 and the smallest was $4,400. The cheques were tendered between January and March this year. In one instance, a cheque for $17,600 was drawn on a closed account at CIBC in Port Antonio, Portland.

Several cheques were made out to Prime Sports Limited, a gaming house located at a Kingston hotel. Two directors of the company are sons of former chairman of Caymanas Track Limited (CTL) Danny Melville.

Mr. Melville resigned as Member of Parliament for North East St. Ann last year and severely criticised the current politics of the country saying his role as a parliamentarian seemed to be defined as an attender of funerals, co-ordinator of patronage and a symbol of tribalism.

Since then, Melville has been blamed for loss of support for the PNP in parts of St. Ann.

Last week, Mr. Ennis described the public revelation of the bounced cheques as embarrassing, but said he would not allow anyone to deter him from the task ahead. He also said he would contest the West Portland seat again for the PNP in the upcoming elections. He has been MP since 1989.

However, in the release from The Office of the Prime Minister, Mr. Ennis future as MP seemed uncertain.

The release said: "Mr. Ennis has indicated he will discuss his tenure as Member of Parliament for West Portland with his constituents and the party president, when he returns to the island next week".

At an earlier post-Cabinet press conference at Jamaica House, Information Minister Maxine Henry-Wilson, grilled by journalists, said members of the Cabinet were not told Mr. Ennis's portfolio responsibility had been changed.

However, at least one Cabinet Minister and the Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Carlton Davis, appeared to have known about the change.

A joint release from both last week, but which was under the signature of Dr. Omar Davies, said, "I assumed responsibility for Betting and Gaming in March 2001."

The report said, it was decided "... Minister Ennis would be released from responsibilities relating to the Betting Gaming and Lotteries Commission, including horse racing in order to allow him to focus attention on project implementation."

The projects named included the North Coast Highway and other road projects financed by the European Union and the Kuwaiti Government.

I've heard from good source's that Olympic might have to move to another country.Rumor has it that the top choice would be Antiqua. There's a good chance they are going to be shut down.No need to worry about post-up money it's good as gold in Spiro's hands.

Singin’: don’t worry about a thing,
’cause every little thing gonna be all right!

Could you come clean and tell us what your beef is with Oly? Did you stiff him?

The logic escapes me.....I stiffed Spiros and so now I am posting about his legal problems on a board that claims to be about offshore gambling issues........hmmmmmmm

I would have thought that keeping a low profile would have been a better ploy with someone so popular and running what you all seem to consider one of the biggest and best books on the net!

You clearly like they guy why don't you ask him who he stiffed?

Local news media coverage of Spiros's day in court pegs him as merely "an employee" of the company - and there I was thinking he is the main man!

I am still interested to know why all those including the Shrink who so fiercely denied that this was even true are now deathly silent.

Internet betting case pushed back to July

PETRE WILLIAMS, Observer staff reporter
Thursday, May 20, 2004

WESTERN BUREAU - The case against the Montego Bay-based Sports Data Services Limited and its managing director, Spiros George Athanas, who are accused of illegally carrying out internet betting, was postponed yesterday because of an incomplete case file.

The case is to be brought back before the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate's Court on July 26 when all outstanding statements should have been added to the file. RM Wilson Smith has opted not to have Athanas fingerprinted until then.

His decision came in the wake of submissions from the accused man's attorneys - Norma Linton QC and Clayton Morgan - who argued that it was important to first determine whether Athanas should have been charged.

Morgan later told reporters that as a mere employee of the company, Athanas should not have been charged.

Athanas and Sports Data Services Limited are alleged to have carried on the business of poolbetting and bookmaking at Olympic Data Services Limited (a subsidiary of Sports Data Services Limited) without being licensed or authorised to do so. This alleged offence, the prosecution contends, is in breach of section 20a of the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Act.

The company was licensed by JAMPRO to operate as a telemarketing agency when it was established at the Free Zone in 1996. However the company has allegedly been operating outside the ambits of that license, taking bets both locally and overseas via calls made to its 1-800 number.

Morgan took issue with the allegations yesterday, insisting that the company's operations were in accordance with the telemarketing license that it was granted by JAMPRO.

"We are saying that telemarketing is broad enough to include betting and gaming so you need no further permission from the Betting, Gaming and Lotteries Commission to do it," the attorney said. "The Memorandum of Association of Olympic Sports Limited gives them permission to do betting and gaming offshore."

Bravoboy,

I don't really understand your agenda...

OLYMPIC SPORTS is an EXCLLENT sports book, and there appears to be much more to this than meets the eyes...

Spiros has always done the RIGHT thing when it comes to paying out gamblers and rather than chastise him over this ridiculous charge, all you want to do is attack someone when they are down...

I believe OLYMPIC SPORTS will get out of JAMAICA just as soon as is possible and unlike other rogue operations, the fact that ANTIGUA welcomes them should speak volumes about Spiros' character and the QUALITY of his operation...

This is about legality and accountability and the truth the industry is still riddled with books and owners with shady pasts, and they are offshore exactly because there is no accountability. You yourself are conflicted - unless I am sorely mistaken your organisation receives advertising dollars from Olympic. Who holds you accountable?

In this particular instance Spiros has not been telling the truth and now he will be held accountable by the authorities in the country where he chose to set up his operation. Are you suggesting that this is wrong? Should he be above the law? Why move to Antigua? is there less accountability there?

You still have the blinkers on on this one - the industry will never get the credibility it wants until it faces these issues head on!

These are called FACTs not hype, not spin just cold hard facts............. face them

ACCEPTANCE

Life has no other discipline to impose,
if we would but realize it,
than to accept life unquestioningly.
Everything we shut our eyes to,
everything we run away from,
everything we deny, denigrate or despise,
serves to defeat us in the end.
What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become
a source of beauty, joy and strength,
if faced with an open mind.
Every moment is a golden one for him
who has the vision to recognize it as such.

- Henry Miller
